Volunteer Opportunities with London Life Young Leaders of Tomorrow Program

Generously sponsored by London Life, United Way’s Young Leaders of Tomorrow aims to develop future community leaders who will play an active role in the development of a strong and caring community. United Way is committed to nurturing leadership and voluntarism in young people. Since 2002, Young Leaders of Tomorrow has been empowering youth to become leaders in their communities and give non-profit organizations the opportunity to benefit from youth involvement.



Young Leaders of Tomorrow has 3 parts:



1. Training

· learn range of concrete skills

· guest speakers lead sessions on topics including roles and responsibilities of boards, group decision making, finances and budgeting, diversity and inclusively, preparing for strategic planning, evaluation and measurement, leadership

· 10 sessions: 8 mandatory, 2 optional, held Saturdays from September to end of April



2. Placement

· active member on a non-profit board of directors or committee

· as non-voting member, regularly attend and participate in discussions and decisions that affect organization and those it helps

· approximately one meeting (2-3 hours) per month, September to end of April



3. Short essay

· write 5 page essay

· outlines work of placement, what learned about area of care (or population, issue), what learned personally from experience

· topic can be researched in more depth, outside sources can be included





Get involved

Anyone between 18 and 24 years of age is eligible to become a ‘young leader’. To take part, you must be able to attend the training sessions and board or committee meetings over an eight month period from September to the end of April.



For an organization to be eligible it must hold regular (every 4-6 weeks) board of directors or committee meetings and have a constitution, bylaws and/or terms of reference. It also must encourage the young leader to actively participate in discussions.
